9천명의 반세계화 활동가들이 

세계경제포럼에 반대해 행진하다. 







9천명 이상의 활동가들이 ‘세계화반대’를 외치며 서울 도심을 통과하는 세계
경제포럼 반대 행진을 진행했다. 시위대는 세계경제포럼이 부자들을 보호하고 
빈곤을 증가시킨다고 비판했다. 




40명의 한국학생들이 돌과 물병을 경찰에 던지면서 세계경제포럼 개최지 한 블
록앞에서 충돌이 벌어졌다. 그들은 경찰들과 서로 주먹질과 발길질을 교환했
고 빨강, 파랑, 노랑 물감이 든 풍선을 경찰에게 던졌다. 경찰은 시위대를 곤
봉으로 때리는 것으로 대응했다. 시위대는 6시간의 시위 후 해산했다. 




서울의 뉴스채널인 YTN에 따르면 적어도 시위대중 두 명이 머리에 피를 흘리
며 병원으로 후송됐다. 경찰은 제네바에 기반하고 있는 세계경제포럼회의가 개
최되는 사치스러운 호텔로 향하는 8차선 도로를 경찰버스를 이용해 봉쇄했다. 




시위대는 땀이 솟는 여름 더위 속에서 행진하며 ‘우리는 가난한 사람들을 착
취하는 세계경제포럼에 반대한다’라고 외쳤다. 시위대는 또한 ‘아시아는 상
품이 아니다’라는 배너와 팻말을 들고 행진했다. 




시위대 규모를 9천3백명으로 추정한 경찰은 호텔에서 한 블록 떨어진 곳에서부
터 행진을 차단했다. 그러나 즉각적인 충돌은 없었다. 경찰은 플라스틱 방패
로 버스의 지붕을 막아 시위대가 버스를 올라오는 것을 막았다. 시위대는 주먹
을 불끈 쥐고 하늘을 향해 치켜 올리며 ‘경찰은 물러나라’라고 외쳤다. 




세계경제포럼 관리들은 서울 회의를 통해 금융서비스와 자연자원, 교육과 혁
신 등 아시아의 미래 경쟁력에 대해 논의할 예정이라고 말했다. “시위대는 
이 국제회의에 대해 잘못알고 있는 것 같다‘고 세계경제포럼은 성명을 통해 
말했다. ”포럼은 번영과 안전 그리고 평화를 고무하고 민중들의 이익을 위해 
지역과 국제적 협력을 개발시키기 위한 것이다“ 성명은 밝혔다. 




시위조직자들은 세계경제포럼을 ‘세계 지배 엘리트들의 배타적인 포럼’이라
며 ‘아시아 노동자들과 민중들의 권리를 악화시키고 있다’고 비판했다. 대부
분의 활동가들은 한국의 노동자, 농민들이었으며 170명의 일본, 필리핀 및 다
른 아시아 십여 개 국가에서 온 해외참가자들도 동참했다고 조직자들은 성명서
를 통해 밝혔다. 




성명서는 세계경제포럼 서울 회의는 ‘미국과 그 제국주의 동맹자들’이 ‘아
시아지역의 군사적 통제’와 ‘자본의 이윤을 보호’를 확대하는 것을 토론할 
것이다‘라고 말했다. 




시위대는 또한 한국정부가 3천6백명의 군대를 이라크에 보내겠다는 결정을 취
소할 것을 요구했다. 한국정부는 오래동안 연기된 구체적인 파병계획을 다음주
에 발표할 예정이다. 한국 언론들은 한국 정부가 군대를 8월 쿠르드 도시인 에
르빌에 보낼 것이라고 보도하고 있다. 




More than 9,000 activists shouting "No to globalization!" marched 
through downtown Seoul on Sunday to protest a meeting of the World 
Economic Forum, which they accused of protecting the rich and increasing 
poverty. 




Scuffles erupted a block from the forum's venue when 40 South Korean 
students hurled rocks and water bottles at police. They traded kicks and 
punches with police and hurled balloons containing red, blue and yellow 
dye. 

Police beat them back with plastic batons. The protesters dispersed 
after a six-hour demonstration. 




At least two protesters were rushed to a hospital with their heads 
bleeding, Seoul's all news cable channel YTN reported. 




Police buses formed a blockade across an eight-lane road leading to the 
posh hotel where the Geneva-based WEF opened a two-day meeting, police 
said. 

"We oppose the WEF, which exploits the poor!" the protesters chanted, 
while marching in sweltering summer heat. They also carried anti-war 
banners and placards that said, "Asia is not for sale!" 




Police, who estimated the crowd at 9,300, stopped the march a block from 
the hotel, but no immediate clashes were reported. Officers holding 
plastic shields crowded on the roofs of the bus barricade to prevent 
demonstrators from climbing over. 




Pumping clenched fists into the sky, protesters chanted, "Police go 
away!" 

WEF officials said the Seoul meeting will discuss ensuring Asia's future 
competitiveness in areas such as financial services, natural resources, 
education and innovation. 




"The demonstrators seem to be misinformed about the nature of this 
international meeting," the forum said in a statement. "(The forum) 
exists to develop regional and international cooperation for the good of 
the people and to promote prosperity, security and peace." 




Protest organizers called the WEF an "exclusive forum of the ruling 
elites of the world," and accused it of "deteriorating the rights of 
Asian workers and peoples." 




Most of the activists were South Korean labor and farm protesters, who 
were joined by 170 foreigners from Japan, the Philippines and a dozen 
other Asian countries, the organizers said in a statement. 

It said the WEF's Seoul meeting would discuss ways for "the United 
States and its imperialist allies" to expand "military control over the 
Asian region" and "protect the profit of capital." 




Demonstrators also demanded that South Korea retract its decision to 
send 3,600 troops to Iraq. 

The country is expected to announce details of the long-delayed military 
dispatch next week. Local media reported South Korea will send the 
troops to the Kurdish town of Irbil in August.
